John and Doug’s Tavern and Package
8 North Main St.
Williamstown, NJ 08094
(856) 629-7237

I’ve been to John and Doug’s several times in the past, but never to actually drink.
The only times I’ve ever come in here in the past was because it was late and I
needed package goods.  There was a very good reason I never sat down and had a
drink in here before.  Not only is the bar a rough place to begin with, I’m, well, the
wrong color to be in this bar.  Even when buying package goods I’ve gotten stares
from people, and I’m not talking about good stares, like the stare of an attractive
woman in the corner.  It is the stare of a man who wants to kill me.

To be safe, I decided to visit this bar in the middle of the afternoon.  I had some
business in Williamstown and I finished a bit early.  I also took Tami along, so if
anything went down, I could use her as a bargaining chip.  Luckily, the bar was fairly
empty, so there wasn’t too much to worry about.  We sat down and ordered a couple
of bottles of Yuengling, which cost $2.

Although pretty crappy and run down looking inside (and outside for that matter),
there were three pool tables, a dart board and even a juke box with some good
music inside.  When I went to whip Tami in pool, the bartender came over and gave
us a cue ball.  I guess they can’t leave them in the table due to theft.  That tells you
something about the bar right there.  The bar is divided into the actual bar and a
liquor store separated by a few stairs.  At night however you have to buy the
package goods from the bar area.

Like I’ve said before, although I’ve never drank here before, I have been in here
many times.  In all of those times, I have never seen anyone else working here
except for this one guy.  It doesn’t matter if it’s 3 in the afternoon or 2 in the morning;
this guy is both running the liquor store side of it as well as the bar.  I would guess
that he is either John or Doug, but he appears to be Indian, and neither of those two
names sounds Indian, so I don’t know.  Don’t be surprised when you see him.  It
looks like he was severely burned a long time ago and lost a few of his fingers as a
result, but he can still crack open beers just as fast as anyone else.

Good point about the bar:  If you go on a weekday afternoon you can drink cheap
beers, play pool and listen to good music without running a high risk of dieing.

Bad point about the bar:  The bar area is about 8 inches lower than the pool table
area, so I tripped like an idiot at least twice while walking the four feet from the pool
table to the bar to grab my beer.  Others seemed to find this quite amusing.

White trash factor (1-10):  1 - for obvious reasons

Ratio of girls to guys: 1:10

Crowd density:  normally it is medium, but this particular visit had a very low crowd
density, thank god.

Age of the crowd:  thirties to forties

Overall rating:  3 – Although I gave this bar points for having character and points for
having a lot to do, the risk of being killed brings it down somewhat.

Here's a picture of the outside.  Just by looking at it you can tell it's ghetto.
